Open Source Programs - A "Free" alternative to computer software.
Purchasing software for a computer doesn't have to be a hassle. Learn about Open Source computer programs as well as the advantages and disadvantages.
It's true, there is no such thing as free. Everything is obtained at a cost; whether it be time or money. Although if you have time to setup an open source application and learn to use one, you have saved yourself money.
There are many open source programs out there ready to be used. Why are they not used often or why have I not heard of them, you ask? Simply because there is little advertising for open source software and the majority of them do come with a cost of time. On some, you may have to compile the code of the program before you can use it.
Ultimately, if you want to get up and running with software, consider purchasing it. The greatest benefit would have to be technical support.
But if you have the time to find out about open source programs I have included a list below of simple, safe, programs and their properties.
Much like Microsoft Office, it provides a “Word”, “Excel”, “Power Point”, but named differently, of course.

Need to edit an mp3 file? View the waves of an .mp3 or .wav file as you edit it.
A great Internet Filter, considering it is open source. It blocks websites containing pornography, violence, or p2p file sharing.
A great operating system with a variaty of programs built in to get you far with little cost.
